Knee Ligament Injuries

Patient Information

Knee Ligament Injuries

Knee ligament injuries are most often encountered in sporting pursuits such as football, rugby and skiing. The injuries are caused by a sideways or twisting injury to the knee.

The majority of the injuries seen occur in recreational sportsmen and women.

The most commonly injured ligaments are the medial collateral ligament on the inner side of the knee and the anterior cruciate ligament deep inside the knee.

Knee ligament injuries can be associated with lasting consequences so it is important to seek expert advice from the outset.

Some ligament injuries require little attention other than physiotherapy treatment and bracing and a full recovery can be expected.

Sometimes, even with prompt rehabilitation, surgical intervention is required to control stability of the knee.
